Ithaka 21 | Monumental is looking for young ambitious artists

Opgelet: dit artikel lijkt al van een tijdje geleden te zijn. Dit is mogelijk niet de meest recente informatie over dit onderwerp.

Ithaka is a visual arts exhibition for young artistic talent. Our twenty-first edition takes place March 26th untill March 31th 2013. Fifteen fresh artists will expose at an exclusive location in the city centre of Leuven.

Ithaka gives young artists the opportunity to exhibit for the first time and introduces them to a large audience. Earlier professional experience is not necessary. Artists who are selected for Ithaka will be guided and supported financially (with a maximum of 500 euro per project). On top of this all we organize info sessions and workshops about entering the professional life. We work together with M – Museum Leuven, arts center STUK and Lieven Gevaert Center for Photography to provide our artists with feedback and personal advice.

Ithaka is set up by volunteers and students with an appetite for culture. The initiator is LOKO, the Leuven student union. We sought and found a unique location. Out of the proposals we will make a selection of 15 artists, with the advice of experienced cultural actors in Leuven. Communication, production and logistics are in our own hands.

Ithaka has been an exclusive location project for twenty-one years. Interested artists can visit the selected deserted, empty location together with the Ithaka-team. This year our location is situated in buildings that are owned by Cera in the centre of Leuven (Helleputtegebouw, Hôtel d'Eynatten and Vlaamse Leergangen). Cera proudly offers this location to young and creative students. Artists can use the location as inspiration for their work, but this is not mandatory. It is possible to visit the location in advance.

For twenty-one years Ithaka is a theme project, there is a link between the theme and the location. This year we are working with the term ‘Monumental’. Two of the three buildings are protected monuments. What does this mean for the building, for the city and its inhabitants? Is monumentality or grandiosity either overrated or not enough appreciated? Ithaka 21 Monumental wants to reflect about the developments in urbanization, monumentality and the transition of a building or a human being into a monument.
