THE VOICE is seeking team members and contributors: Position Descriptions

THE VOICE, international student magazine, is seeking a new editors, editor assistents, writers , photographers and artists for the academic year 2013-2014.

Application for editorial positions should be done no later than 20 September.

Find the description for all positions below. Please note that all positions are for student volunteers. 

Looking for an internship? THE VOICE has a spot for students of cultural studies in the first and second semester.

NEWS EDITOR

Responsibilities:
  • Manage the News section, which will cover university, local, national, and global events and issues relevant to the international community of KUL.
  • Identify priority articles and related photos for each issue of THE VOICE.
  • Network with the Flemish student newspaper Veto to leverage their knowledge and understanding of what is happening locally and nationally.
  • Keep in touch with key local contacts within the university and city to stay aware of upcoming news events. 
  • Work with the Editor-in-Chief to assign articles/photos to writers/photographers. Follow up with writers/photographers and ensure that articles are completed in a timely manner.
  • Write at least 1 article monthly.
  • Edit articles primarily for quality of news coverage and accuracy of facts. Adjust length of articles if necessary.
  • Work closely with the Assistant News Editor
  • Give guidance to writers

This role would be a great fit if you:

  • Enjoy following Belgian and global politics, events, and issues. 
  • Would enjoy networking to discover relevant news stories.
  • Would enjoy the challenge of balancing and prioritizing university, local, national, and global news.
  • Are able to synthesize what is happening, imagine interesting angles for articles, and are passionate about sharing it with the international community of KUL.

ASSISTANT NEWS EDITOR

Responsibilities:
  • Work closely with the News Editor on tasks related to the News Section.
  • Write at least 1 article monthly.

ASSISTANT CULTURE EDITOR

Responsibilities:
  • Work with the Culture Editor on tasks related to the Culture Section. 
  • Write at least 1 article monthly.

FEATURES EDITOR

Responsibilities
Manage the Features section. This section will cover a special subject of interest proposed by the Features Editor for each issue and agreed upon by the team. "Features" refers to the major, "in-depth" articles, essentially the centerpiece of each issue of THE VOICE. There will be at least 1 such article per issue. The section may also include other smaller articles related to the subject area.
Identify articles and related photos/artwork for each issue of THE VOICE.
Work with the Editor-in-Chief to assign articles/photos/artwork to writers/photographers/artists. Follow up with them and ensure that articles are completed in a timely manner.
Edit articles primarily for quality of content and accuracy of facts. Adjust length of articles if necessary.
Write at least 1 article monthly (does not have to be the in-depth article every month).
Work closely with the Assistant Features Editor.

This role would be a great fit if you:
Enjoy exploring subjects at length and like to write.
Are already bursting with ideas for subject areas.
Would be creative in identifying stories and angles for them.

ASSISTANT FEATURES EDITOR

Responsibilities:
Work with the Features Editor on tasks related to the Features Section.
Write at least 1 article monthly.

LAYOUT EDITOR

Responsibilities:
Manage the layout process each month.
Work with the Editor-in-Chief to design the layout and magazine cover, as well as complete final layout, using Adobe InDesign.
Work with other editors to organize articles, photos, and artwork.
Adjust length of articles if necessary.

This role would be a great fit if you:
Have an eye for visual layout and attention to detail.
Have experience in graphic design (especially Adobe InDesign).

ASSISTANT LAYOUT EDITOR

Responsibilities:
Work with the Layout Editor on the layout process.

COPY EDITOR

Responsibilities:
Jointly work with the Editor-in-Chief to proofread and edit all articles for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and style.
Check articles to ensure that they would be comprehensible to an international group of readers.
Work with writers on revisions.
Adjust length of articles if necessary.

This role would be a great fit if you:
Are a native English speaker or very fluent.
Have great attention to detail.
Are a good writer and enjoy editing.

PHOTO EDITOR

Responsibilities:
Work with editors and writers to identify photos for articles and cover, as necessary.
Work freelance photographers to collect photos for articles and cover, as necessary. Take photos as requested in a timely manner.
Edit photos as necessary to ensure good print copy.

This role would be a great fit if you:
Enjoy photography and photo editing.
Have an eye for appealing photo content.

FREELANCE WRITERS

Responsibilities:
Write articles upon request by editors. Work closely with an editor to plan the article.
Accurately research stories, if necessary, and check facts provided by sources.
Submit articles in a timely manner.

This role would be a great fit if you:
Enjoy writing, whether it be journalistic writing or creative writing.
Have attention to details.

FREELANCE PHOTOGRAPHERS

Responsibilities:
Work with photo editor to identify photos for articles, as necessary
Take photos as requested in a timely manner. This could be both conceptual or journalistic photography
Submit articles in a timely manner.

This role would be a great fit if you:
Enjoy writing, whether it be journalistic writing or creative writing.
Have attention to details.

FREELANCE ARTISTS

Responsibilities:
Create artwork upon request by editors. Work closely with an editor to ensure artwork matches THE VOICE's needs. Artwork may be used to support an article, may stand on its own, or may be used for the magazine cover.
Submit artwork in a timely manner.

This role would be a great fit if you:
Enjoy drawing, painting, and any other type of art that could be used within a magazine.
Can work with editors to creatively meet the magazine's needs.
