Last Thursday the Fakbars were closed. This is why.

Opgelet: dit artikel lijkt al van een tijdje geleden te zijn. Dit is mogelijk niet de meest recente informatie over dit onderwerp.

Fakbars  are an essential part in Leuvenís student life. They are a meeting spot, a place to discuss important things accompanied with a beer and to escape with fellow students. Unfortunately they have to deal with more and more problems. The number of students in Leuven continues to rise, but itís extremely hard to increase the capacity of the fakbars to the same extent. More and more students end up in the street, with street noise and other forms of disturbance as a result.

From various angles people are trying to offer solutions. Move a number of fakbars to the Oude Markt?  Let the university provide other and bigger buildings? This is really nothing more than moving the problems and creating new ones. The Oude Markt is too expensive and not everyone is happy with the new competition there. The university rather doesnít want to give the protected buildings to fakbars and the necessary budget is not there.

The fakbars, the circles and the volunteers are trying to manage with what they have. They ensure stewards and try to make students leave the fakbar quietly with several campaigns. They notice, however, that their reach isnít always large enough. The neighbors and the fakbars keep on experiencing disturbance of groups of students that canít keep it civilized.

Therefore, the city of Leuven, the educational institutions, the police, the fakbars and LOKO organise the nuisance campaign in October every year.  But it stays difficult to reach the students. The start of the Octobercampaign this year was one that was difficult to ignore: the fakbars were closed for one night. Do we have your attention now? Then keep reading!

We are tired of it.

The fakbars in Leuven are at a turning point. Like it is going now, it can go on anymore. The troubles are really becoming too big and threats to move or even close the fakbars are expressed more and more.  The latter means we now have, is you: the Leuven student. We need you to secure the existence of the fakbar.

Almost every student goes out from time to time and doesnít do absolutely nothing wrong. But for a few among us, the boundaries are getting blurry. Vandalism, night nuisance and pollution are becoming increasingly common and the wrong persons or insitutions are held responsible.

Do you notice things that really canít happen? Donít hesitate to say soemthing about it. Ask the stewards to do  something about it. Report the nuisance. Everything you do will be highly appreciated.

At the same the time, the problems are often not at all the fault of the fakbars. When they are not open, there is as much nuisance. The Oude Markt and other entertainment areas are getting full. Students party scattered around the city. And then there are no volunteers trying to keep the disturbance within the limits.

A public secret.

In order to give a clear signal, there was chosen to organise a surprise action. If everyone wouldíve been informed already, the impact of the action wouldíve been a lot smaller. It was necessary to draw attention, so we can point out it is really time for a change! Now is the time to get down the nuisance ourselves, with all Leuven students together. Now is the time to show the critics that students are responsible. It is now that we can make sure the fakbars will not dissapear.

This Thursday already helped a lot. Neighbours realised that fakbars, circles and students are doing their best to keep down the disturbance, and that they are even willing to give up a lucrative Thursday night for it. The city council saw that without fakbars the nuisance stays the same and that they need more patrols to keep down the disturbance. But now we have to make sure this wasnít for nothing.  Help us, help yourself and fight along against the nuisance.
